Art music of the late 20th and early 21st century is more diverse than any earlier point in history. The forms, types of compositions, combinations of instrumental colors and use of voice continue to expand the boundaries. Now is a chance to do some research on your own.
This discussion assignment should reflect your study of, and research about, a piece of music you select from the works by one of the composers in the list below.
60 points Main posting: 400-500 words. Find a piece of music by one of the compsers in the list, below. Do some background research on it, to provide interesting factual background about the piece and how it fits into the music of its time and that composers career. Include at least two musical decriptions with track timings, which are meant to point out something interesting in the track(s) you provide for others students to listen to. This is a Jazz music concert.
Fifty percent of your grade will be based on your musical analysis of the performances. You will need to describe elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, texture, timbre, etc.
The review should be in 2 parts:
1) The names of the performing groups/ artists;
Describe the setting. Is it a large hall or an intimate theater? What type of audience is there? Young or old?
The titles of all compositions being performed. Include the specific movements if it includes multi-movement works. Often these will be tempo indications such as Allegro, Andante, Molto Vivace, etc.
Describe one or more musical elements that you recognize in the compositions.
what instruments did they play?
Identify the style period (If you are unaware what the style is, look up the composer and compare it to the period discussed in the book). The dates will often appear in the program. Mention any instrument that stands out and explain why.
2) How do they respond to the music?
Describe your personal reaction to the concert. List reasons why you think it was successful or not.(focus more on the Program 2)?
